Island of Brac-Croatia
THE ISLAND OF BRAC is the highest island on the Adriatic sea (Vidova gora mountain 778 m) and with its surface of 395 km2 it occupies an important - the third position according to its size among 1200 islands on the Adriatic archipelago. Brac belongs to the sunniest Adriatic area with more than 2700 solar hours yearly with average temperature of 23,8 oC in summer and 8,6 oC in winter months. The name of the island itself is for the first time mentioned in the 10th century and it is considered that it originates from the word "deer" (Illyrian brentin, Greek elephus), so it is often mentioned as Bretanida or Elaphus. Brac is proud of its numerous archeological founds: Illyrian tombs, old Croatian churches, old Christian basilicas and the great number of monasteries. Beside cattle breeding, olive producing and wine-making the important activity on the island is stone carving. The stone from Brac is famous all over the world and it has been used on many renown buildings (White House in Washington). The mild climate, beautiful nature, clean sea and beautiful beaches make this island irresistible and it with reason becomes the pearl of the Croatian tourist offer.
OTOK BRAC najvisociji je otok na Jadranu (Vidova gora 778 m), a s površinom od 395 km kvadratnih zauzima trece mjesto po velicini izmeðu 1200 otoka i otocica na hrvatskoj obali Jadrana. Brac pripada najsuncanijem jadranskom podrucju s više od 2700 suncanih sati godisnje i prosjecnom temperaturom 23,8 stupnjeva C u ljetnim, a 8,6 stupnjeva C u zimskim mjesecima. Ime otoka Braca spominje se prvi puta u X. stoljecu i smatra se da potjece od rijeci "jelen" (ilirski brenton, grcki elephus) pa se spominje i kao Bretanida i Elaphus. Brac se ponosi brojnim arheoloskim nalazistima: ilirske grobnice, starohrvatske crkvice, starokrcæanske bazilike i samostani. Uz stocarstvo, maslinarstvo i vinogradarstvo znacajna djelatnost na otoku Bracu je kamenoklesarstvo. Bracki kamen poznet je u cijelom svijetu i koristen je za gradnju mnogih znamenitih graðevina (Bijela kuca u Washingtonu). Blaga klima, predivna priroda, cisto more i prekrasne plaze te bogata arheoloska nalazišta cine ovaj otok neodoljivim te s razlogom postaje biser hrvatske turisticke ponude.
